Things to do in Clearwater and Tarpon Springs

Clearwater is about two hours west of Orlando, and the trip covers two different places. Clearwater Beach sits on a barrier island with pale quartz sand, linked to the mainland by a causeway and separated from Clearwater proper, where the Clearwater Marine Aquarium runs its rescue and rehabilitation program.

Dunedin and Caladesi Island lie further north, reachable by passenger ferry. Tarpon Springs, about 30 minutes north of Clearwater, is a working sponge-diving town settled by Greek immigrants, with docks, boat tours, and Greek restaurants along the Anclote River. March through May and the fall months bring the steadiest weather; summer afternoons turn stormy after about 2pm.

This is a full day from Orlando if rushed, better as an overnight.
