Things to do in Crystal River and the Nature Coast

Crystal River sits about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours northwest of Orlando via Florida's Turnpike and SR 44, on Kings Bay, a basin fed by dozens of freshwater springs that hold a constant 72 F (22 C) year-round. It is the only place in the United States where guided in-water encounters with wild manatees are legal, under a passive-observation rule: no chasing, no touching first.

Manatees concentrate here from November to March, when the Gulf cools below spring temperature and they move inland; outside that window, kayaking, fishing, and swimming the springs are still worthwhile, but manatee sightings become uncommon. Three Sisters Springs anchors the refuge at the heart of town, Homosassa and its river lie just south, and Cedar Key, a quieter barrier-island outpost with no real beach, sits further north.

Trips typically run as a single day out of Orlando, with the calmest water and the best odds at Three Sisters Springs on tours departing at first light.
